Dr. Shi is a Professor of Engineering Geology at Nanjing University and the President of Nanjing University High-Tech Institute at Suzhou and Director of Geo-engineering and Geo-informatics Department, Nanjing University. He holds BSc (1983), MSc (1986) and PhD (1995) degrees from Nanjing University. He is a board member of the International Society for Structural Health Monitoring of Intelligent Infrastructure (ISHMII), a member of International Association of Engineering Geology, the Vice-Director of Engineering Geology Commission, China Geology Society. He has been a visiting scholar at Lenegrade University,Russia, Geological Survey Institute of Japan, University of Massachusetts, Ibaraki University, and University of North Carolina. In 2003, he received the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars of China. He is currently the editorial board member of Chinese Journal of Geotechnical Engineering, Rock and Soil Mechanics, Journal of Engineering Geology, Hydrogeology and Engineering Geology, and Journal of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Engineering, and a reviewer of international journals such as Engineering Geology. He has authored over 400 publications on engineering geology, environmental geotechnology, micromechanics of geo-materials and fiber optic monitoring. Since 2010, Dr. Shi have conducted over 30 research projects on geo-engineering monitoring and evaluation using fiber optic sensing technology.
