The Editorial for the new issue (Volume 9 Issue 3) of Environmental Geotechnics authored by Prof. Bin Shi, the president of ISEG, was published on May 13, 2022. This was under the invitation of Prof. D.N Singh, the Editor-in-Chief of the journal and Vice-President of ISEG.
In the Editorial, Prof. Shi first pointed out the current worldwide challenges in mitigating climate warming and sustainable development, which also provided new opportunities for the field of environmental geotechnology. The five papers in this issue mainly focus on carbon capture and storage technologies, mine safety and tailing utilization, and sustainable remediation of landfill leachate-contaminated soil. He summarized and commented the papers, and put forward prospects for future research. Finally, based on his over 20 years of service in ISEG, the research experience in environmental geotechnology of his group over the past 20 years, and the findings of the five papers in this issue, Prof. Shi suggested the following future research prospects in environmental geotechnology: 1) The development and application of low-carbon technologies, 2) Green remediation of eco-system and the environment and high-efficient geohazard prevention, 3) Deep interdisciplinary research based on the emerging technologies.
